Berlin: Founding of the Nationalgalerie, the first museum of its kind to collect and present contemporary art, 1861

Present as well in the founding collection, which goes back to the Berlin banker Wilhelm Wagener, are two paintings by Friedrich: The Solitary Tree and Moonrise over the Sea, a pair of images that were commissioned from Friedrich by Wagener himself in 1822. Although the museum was founded in 1861, it was only in 1876 that Friedrich August Stüler’s new building was finally inaugurated.
