The term “sustainability” (Nachhaltigkeit) in an environmental context was coined by the chief mining administrator of Saxony, Hans Carl von Carlowitz. In response to the dire state of Saxon woodlands and the general timber shortage, he called for “sustainable use” of the tree population in 1713.
