The Carlsbad Decrees massively restrict freedom of expression in the German Confederation (successor bloc to the Holy Roman Empire), 1819
The decrees were triggered by the murder of August von Kotzebue on March 23, 1819.
Friedrich was also targeted by the so-called “persecution of the demagogues” directed against those spreading liberal, anti-monarchical nationalistic ideas.
