Hamburger Kunsthalle acquires its two first works by Friedrich: Meadows near Greifswald and Mountain Landscape in Bohemia, 1904

Alfred Lichtwark, who was director at the time, acquired the two paintings in Greifswald. Additional works followed shortly thereafter. During those years, Lichtwark and Hugo von Tschudi – then director of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin – competed with one another to secure works by Friedrich for their respective collections.
