The first unified German nation state. Up until the end of World War I, the defeat of Germany, and the November Revolution of 1918, Germany was ruled by an emperor: the kaiser. This period is referred to retrospectively as the German Empire. The Weimar Republic – Germany’s first democracy – followed in 1918.
