The initiators were the Dresden patron of the arts Johann Gottlob von Quandt and the Weimar philologist Karl August Böttiger. In 1833, Friedrich’s friend Carl Gustav Carus assumes directorship of the association. During the 1830s, it purchased several works by Friedrich, helping him stay afloat financially.
