The Norwegian art historian Aubert became aware of Friedrich through his preoccupation with the Norwegian landscape painter Dahl, a close friend of Friedrich. Aubert’s book contains the first scholarly investigation of Friedrich’s oeuvre – effectively ‘unearthing’ Friedrich from abroad. The chapter on Friedrich appeared in German a year later in the art magazine Kunstchronik.
